AI in IT: From Automation to Augmentation

Written by Nexlogica Team

August 30, 2023

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as reasoning, learning, decision making, and creativity. AI has been used in information technology (IT) for a long time, mainly for automation purposes. Automation is the process of using machines or software to perform tasks that are repetitive, tedious, or error-prone, without human intervention. Automation can increase efficiency, accuracy, and productivity, while reducing costs and risks.

However, automation is not the only way that AI can transform IT. AI can also enable augmentation, which is the process of using machines or software to enhance or complement human capabilities, rather than replace them. Augmentation can improve performance, creativity, and innovation, while empowering humans to do more and better.

In this blog post, I will discuss some examples of how AI is transforming IT from automation to augmentation, and what that means for IT professionals and users.

AI for Automation

AI has been used for automation in various domains of IT, such as:

  • Data management: AI can automate tasks such as data collection, cleaning, integration, analysis, and visualization. For example, Microsoft Power BI is a business intelligence tool that uses AI to help users access and analyze data from various sources, and create interactive dashboards and reports.
  • Software development: AI can automate tasks such as coding, testing, debugging, and deployment. For example, GitHub Copilot is an AI-powered code assistant that helps developers write better code faster by suggesting code snippets based on their context and preferences.
  • Cybersecurity: AI can automate tasks such as threat detection, prevention, response, and recovery. For example, Microsoft Defender is a comprehensive security solution that uses AI to protect devices, data, identities, and cloud services from various cyberattacks.
  • Customer service: AI can automate tasks such as answering queries, providing support, and generating feedback. For example, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Service is a customer relationship management tool that uses AI to help agents and customers resolve issues faster and more effectively.

AI for Augmentation

AI can also be used for augmentation in various domains of IT, such as:\

  • Data science: AI can augment human data scientists by providing insights, recommendations, and explanations. For example, Microsoft Azure Machine Learning is a cloud-based platform that uses AI to help data scientists build, train, and deploy machine learning models with ease and confidence.
  • Software engineering: AI can augment human software engineers by providing guidance, feedback, and collaboration. For example, Microsoft Visual Studio is an integrated development environment that uses AI to help software engineers write, debug, and optimize code with smart features such as IntelliSense, Live Share, and CodeLens.
  • Cybersecurity: AI can augment human cybersecurity experts by providing alerts, advice, and assistance. For example, Microsoft Azure Sentinel is a cloud-native security information and event management tool that uses AI to help cybersecurity experts detect, investigate, and respond to threats with speed and scale.
  • Customer experience: AI can augment human customer experience by providing personalization, engagement, and satisfaction. For example, Microsoft Cortana is a personal digital assistant that uses AI to help users get things done across devices and applications with natural language and voice commands.

Implications for IT Professionals and Users

The shift from automation to augmentation has significant implications for IT professionals and users. On one hand, it creates new opportunities for learning, growth, and innovation. On the other hand, it also poses new challenges for ethics, trust, and responsibility.

For IT professionals:

  • They need to embrace lifelong learning and upskilling to keep up with the rapid changes and advancements in AI technologies.
  • They need to adopt a human-centric approach to designing and developing AI solutions that are aligned with the needs and values of the users and stakeholders.
  • They need to ensure the quality, reliability, and security of the AI solutions they create or use.
  • They need to adhere to the ethical principles and best practices of using AI responsibly and accountably.

For IT users:

  • They need to be aware of the benefits and risks of using AI solutions in their daily lives or work.
  • They need to be able to understand how the AI solutions work and what they can or cannot do.
  • They need to be able to control the level of autonomy and interaction they want from the AI solutions.
  • They need to be able to trust the outcomes and decisions made by the AI solutions.

Conclusion

AI is transforming IT from automation to augmentation. This means that AI is not only doing things for us but also doing things with us. AI is not only replacing human tasks but also enhancing human capabilities. AI is not only a tool but also a partner. This transformation has profound implications for IT professionals and users, who need to adapt and evolve accordingly. By doing so, we can harness the power of AI to create a better future for IT and beyond.
